First Impressions

When the WeatherBeeta ComFiTec Premier Freedom 220g arrived, the first thing I noticed was the weight of the outer fabric. It feels genuinely substantial — not the flimsy, almost papery material you sometimes get with mid-range rugs. The stitching along the seams is neat and reinforced at the stress points, which is always a good sign.

The lining is soft and smooth — the kind that won’t rub on the shoulders even without a separate liner. WeatherBeeta call it their “memory foam wither relief pad” and honestly, it does make a noticeable difference to how the rug sits across the withers. I’ve had rugs at twice this price that don’t have that kind of thoughtful detail.

Out of the packaging, the rug looks smart. The navy colourway is classic and doesn’t show mud as badly as lighter options. The tail flap is a decent size and the cross surcingles feel robust enough for daily use.

Performance in the Field

I tested this rug over 8 weeks through December and January — and we had everything thrown at us. Heavy rain, sleet, a couple of frosts, and the relentless Gloucestershire mud. The waterproofing held up impressively. After a full night of heavy rain, the inner lining was bone dry. Not damp, not slightly moist — completely dry.

The 220g fill kept my 16.2hh Thoroughbred warm without overheating on milder days. For context, he’s a horse that tends to feel the cold, so this hit the sweet spot for me as an all-round winter rug. On the really bitter days I layered a fleece underneath and he was perfectly comfortable.

The freedom cut around the shoulders is genuinely well-designed. My horse moves freely in it without the rug pulling back or shifting, even after a proper roll. The gussets allow plenty of movement without compromising coverage.

Where it fell slightly short was the leg straps. They’re functional but thin, and after about 4 weeks one of the clips started to feel loose. Not broken — just not as secure as I’d like on a horse who rolls with enthusiasm. Worth keeping an eye on.

Fit & Sizing

I ordered a 6’6” for my TB and the fit was spot on. The neck sits well without gaping, and the tail flap offers decent coverage. The cross surcingles are adjustable enough to get a snug fit without restricting movement. I’d say it runs true to size, perhaps very slightly generous — so if your horse is between sizes, go with the smaller option.

The front closure is a double buckle and surcingle system which I find more secure than Velcro alternatives. It’s easy to adjust even with cold fingers, which matters more than you’d think at 7am in January.

Durability After 8 Weeks

After two months of daily use, the rug is holding up well. There’s the expected wear on the shoulders from stable door rubbing, but no tears, no delamination, and the waterproofing is still performing. The stitching has held everywhere except one minor loose thread on the tail flap which I snipped off.

The main durability concern remains those leg straps. If WeatherBeeta upgraded the clips and used slightly thicker webbing, this would be close to a five-star rug.

Final Thoughts

The WeatherBeeta ComFiTec Premier Freedom 220g does what a good turnout rug should — it keeps your horse dry, warm, and comfortable without costing the earth. The waterproofing is genuinely excellent, the fit is forgiving but not sloppy, and the wither pad is a thoughtful touch that you’ll appreciate come spring when there are no rub marks in sight.

The leg straps are the one weak point, but it’s a minor gripe on an otherwise very solid rug. For the price, you’d struggle to find better.
