Why This Saddle?
Finding a saddle that fits a high-withered Thoroughbred is one of those uniquely frustrating equestrian experiences. After months of trying demo saddles that either bridged, pinched, or cost more than my car, I turned to the Thorowgood T8 High Wither model. At £499, it’s a fraction of the price of most leather dressage saddles, and the adjustable gullet system meant I could potentially avoid the ongoing expense of regular saddler visits.
First Impressions
The T8 is a synthetic saddle, and yes, you can tell. It doesn’t have the feel or smell of leather, and it won’t develop that beautiful patina over time. But it’s well-made, surprisingly comfortable, and considerably lighter than I expected. The seat is deep with a good balance point, and the knee blocks are positioned to encourage a correct dressage position.
The changeable gullet system is the headline feature. It comes with a set of gullet plates in different widths, and swapping them takes about five minutes with the included tool. For a horse whose shape changes with fitness, this is genuinely brilliant.
Performance Over 12 Weeks
I tested the T8 over twelve weeks of regular flatwork schooling, including two dressage clinics. The fit for my horse was excellent with the narrow gullet plate — it cleared the withers well and the panels sat evenly without bridging. A physio check at week six confirmed no pressure points or muscle soreness.
From the rider’s perspective, the deep seat is supportive and gives a lovely feeling of security. It took a few rides to break in slightly, but once it did, the comfort was good. I could sit for an hour without any discomfort.
Where it falls slightly short is the knee rolls. They’re adequate but not as supportive as I’d like for more advanced lateral work. If you’re working at medium level or above, you might find them a little lacking. For Prelim to Novice level, they’re absolutely fine.
Synthetic vs Leather
Let’s address the elephant in the tack room. This is a synthetic saddle at a synthetic price point. It won’t age like leather, it doesn’t grip in quite the same way, and some riders simply prefer the traditional feel. But for the money, the T8 offers a level of fit and adjustability that most leather saddles at twice the price can’t match. And cleaning it takes about thirty seconds with a damp cloth, which is a genuine luxury.
Final Thoughts
The Thorowgood T8 High Wither Dressage Saddle is a smart buy for anyone with a tricky-to-fit horse or who needs an affordable dressage saddle that actually works. The changeable gullet system is the standout feature, and the overall fit and comfort are impressive for the price. It won’t win over the leather purists, but for practical riders who want a saddle that fits their horse well and doesn’t require a second mortgage, it’s hard to beat.
